And unlike English, you can’t just walk into Popular and easily buy a stack of practice papers for Unseen Poetry and Prose. Year after year, I’ve seen students stuck at the same score not because they aren’t smart — but because they’ve never been taught how to think like an examiner and structure high-scoring analysis. That’s exactly what this package fixes.
As a parent of a Sec. 1 or 2 student struggling with English Literature, you’re not alone. You want to support your child, BUT IT'S SO HARD because....
Finding MOE-aligned practice questions, Unseen text help or model essays is nearly impossible.
You cannot find any model essays or practice questions for Unseen Poetry or Prose. Even if you find something online, it's not designed for the MOE Singapore syllabus.
Your child’s school teachers provide minimal feedback or guidance in school. Your child feels unsupported and lost, leaving them lost and unsure of how to improve.
You have no idea how to help your child in English Literature—it wasn’t your strength when you were in school.
That’s exactly what my No-Fear-of-Poetry framework does. I’ve taken my years as a MOE Subject Head and turned my classroom-tested methods into a self-paced course that:
Breaks down analysis into simple, repeatable steps.
Shows exactly how to expand on quotes so essays stop being “too narrative”.
Gives them clarity on how to focus their answers on what they do understand.
🌟 No more staring blankly at a poem they don’t understand.
🌟 No more losing marks for vague answers.
🌟 No more frustration when they “almost” get the point.
INSTEAD, THEY'LL >>>
🌟 Have a system for annotating and analysing any poem or prose.
🌟 Know the exact strategies that earn them higher marks.
🌟 Gain confidence — because they’ve practised on real MOE-style questions with model essays.
Before you decide, see exactly how your child will learn inside the Unseen Texts Mastery Package.
In this lesson sample (the full video is much longer!), I walk students through the 1st stanza or two of Funeral Blues by W.H. Auden. showing them a repeatable method that they can use to grasp a poem’s meaning, even when the language feels abstract or unfamiliar.
This is just one example of the kind of clear, step-by-step guidance your child will get in the program. Imagine them applying this approach to any unseen poem or prose text they encounter in school.
🎥 Press play to watch, and picture your child having this level of support every time they practise.
[All pdf resources are printable, and all video resources can be saved.]
Complete with explanation guides and model answers (for 18 questions in total!), your child can use these Unseen Text practices (some are actual texts taken from past school exam papers!) to be much more prepared for their tests and exams. Beyond merely providing bullet points answers, full model essays help your child better understand how to more effectively structure their answers and craft their literary analysis sentences.
❌ “I don’t understand the poem, so how do I even start writing my analysis?”
❌ "I got a poor score because the poem was too difficult. My marks are dependent on how hard the paper was. I cannot control this..."
Learn my step-by-step annotation & analysis framework, giving your child a structured way to tackle poetry—even if they don’t understand every line.
❌ "My teacher keeps saying ‘Elaborate more!’ but I don’t know what to write.”
❌ "My child's essays are filled with feedback that it's too narrative + lacks literary analysis. But what should she do?"
Fix the #1 reason your child may be losing marks. Many students fall into the trap of narration—simply lifting or paraphrasing quotes instead of explaining the ‘why’ behind the Unseen Text. In this course, I'll show your child how to expand their analysis using literary devices, pushing them above the class average. This method helps them say goodbye to vague, incomplete and shallow answers!
How can your child accurately answer FAQs such as "What is your impression of Character X" or "What are your feelings for Character Y"? Give them easy-to-use keywords to sharpen their essay analysis and strengthen their points with precise and strong vocabulary. Say goodbye to repeating generic phrases and losing marks for a lack of precision and literary analysis!
What is Assonance vs Alliteration? What is Enjambment in Poetry? How do you explain Irony? Discover a list of key literary devices found in most Unseen Poems and Prose, accompanied with easy-to-understand examples and sample explanations, this will take the guesswork out of how to explain the effects of literary devices.

"He was quite surprised he did well in his poetry test. So I really have to let you know to share my happiness although it's just WA1."
"The workshop made her understanding of the techniques clearer and she found it useful."
"Thank you for making Literature alive! I really like enjoy your Literature classes a lot!"
"I'm glad to tell others that I've been taught by Ms Lie. Thanks for being a patient teacher all along and your lit lessons have been really interesting. You always make the whole lit class laugh. Thank you Miss Lie!"
Hi! I'm Cheryl :)
As a former English Lit Subject Head in the Singapore Ministry of Education, I know that many students fear the Unseen section of their exam paper, and ESPECIALLY poetry.
I remember reflecting on my own journey with Unseen Poetry and Prose, and how I grew so in love with poetry while I did Lit in "A" levels and in my university.
At 12 to 14 years of age, many students understandably struggle with deep literary analysis, nevermind abstract themes about experiences that feel foreign to them.
To write an essay about a poem or a prose that they have NEVER seen before can really make students blank out, and it's definitely worse in a test setting.
Why is a higher mark so elusive? Why does my teacher say that I am too vague or lack literary analysis? What does that even mean?
So I dedicated myself to cracking the code of Unseen Poetry / Prose for young students. I have curated an online course which includes my tried-and-tested methods to help students meet the exact criteria that their teachers are looking for.
You've lifelong access to them, so not to worry! You can also download all the notes onto your computer and print them for easy revision reference!
No, some of the content here is also included in the Scoring in Lower Sec Lit online program, so there's no need for you to purchase this :)
As part of the MOE English Literature Syllabus, all students are exposed to Unseen Texts (especially poetry) at Sec 1 and 2. These are not the same as Poetry Packages that your child's school may provide them as part of their weekly lessons. Their exams would usually include 1 Unseen Poem that they have never seen before (hence "Unseen"), and your child will be required to answer the set of questions that demonstrate their knowledge and skills in literary analysis.
No, these resources (video and pdf) are for independent learning (great for ongoing revision!).
If your child is very keen on 'live' online classes, they can sign up for my online masterclasses. Please email me at cheryl@literature-academy.com to find out about the next online class. Note that these may not be offered regularly.
Schools usually provide students with unseen texts that the class may annotate (i.e. add notes) together with the teacher's guidance, or occasionally, they may provide or show students a bullet list of important points that answers a question. However, it's quite rare for a school to prepare model essays for English Literature.
My resources include suggested essay answers that help your child understand how to structure their paragraphs, and what literary analysis and strong explanations actually look like. Due to time constraints, school teachers usually lack time to focus on those aspects. Ironically, your child's key to scoring better in English Lit. is improving their skills in writing strong explanations with literary analysis.
This is my recommended roadmap which I touch on in my Welcome Instructions:
1. Process / Watch / Print everything in the 'Lit Ammunition' Section. This includes important vocabulary lists (e.g. How to describe emotions, tone, characters) that they should use in their annotation, assignments, revision and exams.
2. Print the 5 Unseen Poems and 2 Unseen Prose Questions and Answers. [Parents can keep the answer schemes while your child works on their practice questions.]
3. Process / Watch resources in the Unseen Poetry section, starting with 'How to Annotate Poetry'.
4. Practise annotating the first poem (with my guidance in the 'How to Annotate Poetry' video).
5. Practise writing the first essay for Unseen Poem 1.
6. Complete self-assessment by reading the Suggested Answers for Unseen Poem 1 and identify what's missing in their own answers.
7. Repeat the process for the other Unseen texts!
If for whatever reason this isn't what you were looking for your child, you can request a refund within the first 7 days. Write in to my email to process your refund.
